Transitional Housing Program

SAMMinistries owns 25 single dwelling homes within the San Antonio Metropolitan Area. Families with minor children who meet specific criteria may stay in the homes for up to 24 months. To enter into the Transitional Housing Program: (1) The head of household must be employed full-time, enrolled in an educational program full-time, or some combination of the two that equals full-time status. (2) Families pay up to 30% of adjusted gross income towards rent unless they are a full time student, in which case rent is adjusted to $75 per month.  (3) Families are also required to pay 50% of their utility bills and 100% of their phone bills.  In Fiscal Year 2006, SAMMinistries Transitional Housing assisted 133 unduplicated family residents.  There were a total of 33 family units, of which 40 were adults and 93 were children. Twenty-four out of 24 (100 percent) of the families who left our Transitional Housing Program have entered and remained in permanent housing.  This includes 45 children who now have a stable place to call home.

Permanent Housing- Housing First Program

The primary target population of the Housing First Program is families headed by at least one adult with a diagnosed disability such as mental illness, HIV/AIDS and substance use, and/or other barriers to housing stability including domestic violence and history of out of home placements.  Priority is given to families that have demonstrated self-sufficiency residing in transitional housing programs.

In coordination with the City of San Antonio (COSA), SAMMinistries agrees to furnish sixteen (16) 2 & 3 bedroom SAHA apartment units with the following items: full size and twin size mattresses with frames; couches; dinette sets; and dressers.

Services available to tenants of the Housing First Program include coordination/case management, physical and mental health services, substance abuse management and recovery support, employment services, literacy and education, youth and children’s programs, money management, and parenting classes.  Case Managers meet with participating tenants no less than two (2) times per month to promote self-sufficiency and housing stability.
