How We Help

At SAMMinistries, it’s our goal to meet each person where they are. That is why our Continuum of Care model is so effective. We work with each individual or family and find the way in which we can best meet their needs.

Homeless Prevention Services

SAMMinistries’ Homeless Prevention Services provides rental assistance, utility assistance and supportive services to individuals and families who are in imminent danger of eviction, or are currently homeless.

Homeless Prevention Services Provide

  • Temporary rental, utility, or other critical assistance
  • Supportive services
  • Payments are not made directly to participant

Applicant Eligibility

  • Homeless or in imminent risk of being homeless
  • Current eviction notice (rent) or disconnection notice (utilities)
  • Must have some form of stable income (SSI, SSDI, employment, etc…)

Transitional Housing

SAMMinistries’ Transitional Living and Learning Center (TLLC) is home for 40 families as they work to overcome homelessness. The TLLC provides housing, support and resources to families (parent plus at least one minor child) who show a commitment to gaining self-sufficiency. The individual needs of all family members are supported for a two year period, promoting the viability of the family as a whole while they transition out of homelessness.

Transitional Housing Residents:

  • Have a goal to work or attend school for at least 30 hours per week
  • Meet with Case Managers regularly to establish short and long-term goals
  • Participate in life skills classes: money management, parenting, conflict resolution, etc.

SAMMinistries is a Methodist Healthcare Ministries Funded Partner and is pleased to receive funding for the Integrated Health and Wellness Program which offers resources to improve the physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being of families living at the TLLC.


Rapid Re-housing

The Rapid Re-Housing program reduces the amount of time a family experiences homelessness and rapidly re-houses families into permanent, affordable homes. Financial assistance is provided for up to 3 months along with 12 months of case management.

Rapid Re-Housing Program Provides

  • Assistance with deposit, rent and utilities for up to 3 months
  • Case management with emphasis on budgeting and maintaining self-sufficiency for 12 months

Applicant Eligibility

  • Must be homeless according to Housing and Urban Development’s definition
  • Can be a family, couple, or individual
  • Must be willing to work with case manager for 12 months
  • Must have sustainable income with 60 days

Veterans' Housing Stability Program

The Veterans’ Housing Stability Program (VHSP) provides comprehensive housing support to veterans or surviving spouses through homeless prevention, rapid re-housing and wrap-around services.

The Homeless Prevention Program provides

  • Rental assistance
  • Case management
  • Financial literacy education

The Rapid Re-Housing Program provides

  • Assistance with rental security deposit and utility connection
  • Up tp 3 months rent assistance
  • Case management
  • Modest furniture allowance
  • Financial literacy education

Wrap-Around Client Services include

  • Bus passes
  • Referrals for life skills classes such as parenting, conflict resolution and wellness,
  • Referrals to SAMMinistries’ educational and employment services
  • Other veteran specific referrals as well as referrals to appropriate service providers in the community.

Applicant eligibility

  • Veteran or surviving spouse with an Honorable discharge status from the U.S. Armed Services, DD214 required
  • Must be at imminent risk of being homeless
  • Must have sustainable income

Permanent Supportive Housing

Permanent Supportive Housing assists and empowers families to live as independently as possible. SAMMinistries has a permanent housing program that assists families with whom one member of the family has a disability. SAMMinistries also manages 100 set-aside housing vouchers to help families find permanent housing in the private rental market.

Case managers work with adult participants to achieve the following goals:

  • Remain in (or exit to) permanent housing
    Increase skills and/or income
  • Achieve greater self-determination
  • Achieve financial stability (reduce debt)

Other Supportive Services

At SAMMinistries it is important that we serve our clients and the community holistically. To do this, we offer supportive services to all program participants to support them spiritually, mentally and physically.

Spiritual Services:

  • Holistic wellness classes at the Transitional Living and Learning Center
  • Citywide conferences to educate and equip volunteers and service providers on topics related to poverty and homelessness

Educational Assistance:

  • Emergency aid to students at risk of discontinuing their education
  • Fills gaps left by traditional financial aid including assistance for transportations costs, books, childcare, etc.
  • Funded by revenue generated from the Educational Endowment Fund

Employment Development:

  • Assists clients in obtaining living-wage employment
  • Trains clients to build/enhance skills , knowledge and abilities required by employers
  • Offers a wide-range of services including:
    • Resume building
    • Help filling-out applications
    • Mock interviews
    • Job coaching
    • Employment referrals
    • On the job training
    • Work-related clothing and equipment

Wellness Classes:
SAMMinistries provides weekly wellness classes to clients on topics ranging from parenting and conflict resolution, to budgeting and fitness.

SAMMExpress, located on Oblate Drive next door to the Oblate Café, collects and distributes new and used clothing, household items and furniture that are distributed to clients in all of SAMMinistries programs, including those who are exiting to permanent housing.
