SAMMinistries has been San Antonio’s largest provider for homeless and those at risk of being homeless. Over the years we have expanded our services to provide several levels of assistance from an emergency shelter all the way through a permanent supportive housing program.
The Emergency Shelter located at 910 W. Commerce, serves single men and women, as well as families. This is a walk-in shelter and serves guests on a first come, first served basis. During inclement weather, additional space is utilized and cots are used to accommodate as many people as possible. In collaboration with various agencies, we are able to provide, but are not limited to access to nutritious meals, healthcare, counseling, legal, employment services and housing assistance. We also offer several programs to help in job training, educational needs, and life skills to help our guests succeed in taking steps toward self-sufficiency.
Our Transitional Living and Learning Center is a facility to promote the success of families with children under the age of 18. Families are offered a two year program in which they can pay off their debts and, at the same time, receive numerous services and support including educational programs, parenting and money management classes, and a support through a personal Case Manager. Because the program is extensive and space is limited, requirements are necessary and admittance is made through an application process.
Transitional Housing and Permanent Housing are the final steps a family takes toward self-sufficiency. SAMMinistries has 25 homes in Bexar County that qualifying families may rent at a cost of 30% of their income or, if they are attending school fulltime, $75 a month. Families are also required to pay half of their utility bills. SAMMinistries also works with16 families in the City’s Housing First Program to facilitate self-sufficiency and housing retention by providing Case Management and support services.
Furniture For A Cause is a retail furniture store owned and operated by SAMMinistries. The store which opened in 2004 sells new and gently used donated furniture. All proceeds from sales go directly to support SAMMinistries.
SAMMinistries offers several programs at our different locations to meet the needs of individuals from young to old. SAFE, Helping Hands, Resident Assistant, and our Priority Guest programs offer extensive job training, educational needs, and life enrichment opportunities to adults at our Emergency Shelter. Camp SAMM, ASK(After-School Kare), Play Therapy, and the Teen Program address the needs of children at our Transitional Living and Learning Center. Our Parent Nurturing Program is mandatory for all guests with children at all of our locations |
