India Chumney

Chief Development Officer

India, a native of San Antonio who has worked in the education and social service arena in our community for more than 35 years, joined SAMMinistries in December of 2024 as Chief Development Officer. India leads a Resource Development team responsible for all fundraising and friend raising activities that support SAMMinistries’ programs serving families and individuals on the brink of losing their homes and livelihoods.

India received her bachelor’s degree in Spanish, Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin in 1979. Her career in the social service field began at Communities In Schools of San Antonio where she created a fundraising department to support counseling for underserved youth at risk of dropping out of school.

After more than 14 years at Communities In Schools, India joined the development team at The Children’s Shelter to provide resources for children that were removed from their parental homes by Child Protective Services and placed into two residential shelters. Her fundraising resources also supported Family Strengthening programs such as Nurse Family Partnerships, Compadre y Compadre, iParent and the outpatient trauma treatment centers, Hope I & II that focused on untreated trauma in children and their care givers in the community. That focus on fundraising for prevention services led to her involvement with the Children’s Specialty Courts that were created to try and reunite families that had previously been separated.

After almost ten years at The Children’s Shelter, India joined the staff of SAMMinistries as Chief Development Officer. After volunteering through her church during the creation of SAMMinistries in the early 1980’s, she is thrilled to return to such a vital ministry that has grown into a major advocate for the unhoused individuals & families in the San Antonio community.
